A letter to your younger self will do you no good. For one thing, your younger self would not believe the long list of things to avoid, heartaches to forgive and forget, small triumphs to be savored. All lessons lost on the younger you. Besides, you’re not that clever.
So, congratulations for managing to somehow make it this far with such an attitude! In this moment you are once again remaking yourself into what you wish to be. Sure, there are already some great things about you. You’re generous and sincere. You go a little heavy on the sarcasm, but that’s because you think you’re good at it.
It’s okay that you allow yourself to become distracted from time to time, but damn! What is the hold up? Yes, fake it ‘til you make it is a load of crap and yes, the planet is crowded, polluted, and ready to spin off its axis. So what? Take your own advice. You know all of the platitudes by heart. The sun’ll come out tomorrow. Unless it doesn’t.
Some people love you and you don’t know why. Some people can’t stand you and you don’t care. Okay, you do, but only for the first few minutes. Then it’s their problem. Pointing out the absurd is your kind of fun. Do it. Do it often. Take advantage of opportunities to laugh at yourself. This will come in handy when you can’t remember where you are or how you got here. Write. Write. Write. When you’re stuck, there’s always the laundry.
